Jagdpanzer 38(t) "Hetzer"  Militaria in detail
Waldemar Jedrzejewski
Marcin Jedrzejewski
Jacek Nowicki
This latest addition to the Militaria in Detail series provides the reader with an intimate perspective on the Hetzer 38T with particular emphasis on interior detail.  This softbound 51 page book covers several Hetzer models produced from January 1944 including a fully restored vehicle from 272nd panzerjagerAbeitlang on display in Switzerland. The book is fillled with color and b/w illustrations including  a host of pictures of the interior of the Hetzer.  Several pages are included featuring camo schemes and factory photos of the tank's construction.  The book is written in Polish with English subtitles and does not provide for a lengthy discussion of any one aspect of the Hetzer such as deployment, engineering facts etc.  However, several interesting details were discovered that were not found in other books on the subject such as exhaust screens, rear convoy lights and front headlights to name but a few.  Modestly priced at $9.95 makes it a good buy to add to your Hetzer reference library.  ISBN:83-7219-901-9

To The Caucasus and the Austrian Alps
  by Generalleutnant Dr. Ernst Rebentisch
Ernest Rebentisch is a former member of the 23rd Panzer Division and provides a complete history of the division from its activation in France in October 1941 to its surrender in Austria in May of 1945.  The division fought exclusively on the Eastern Front, and gained a reputation as a reliable unit in some of the toughest battles of WWII.  This book is filled with photos that are not found in other reference books of this type.  Some of which are striking in their composition and provide a remarkable feeling for what it must have been like on the Eastern Front.  The battle depictions are detailed without a lot of fanfare and there are a number of maps and deployment data to support the main narrative.  This impressive book is 536 pages with 104 maps and over
641 photos.  The day to day coverage, detailed maps and excellent
photos make this book a riveting read and a valuable reference.

Tigers in Normandy
  by Wolfgang Schneider
Combat chronicle of the German Tiger tank--one of World War II's best--during the Normandy campaign (June to August 1944)* First time in English* New details on famous tank ace Michael Wittmann* How the Tiger performed against Allied armor, particularly the Sherman* Maps, orders of battle, period photos, and then-and-now shots make this the go-to book on the subject

This turned out to be a very enjoyable book for a number of reasons.  The book provides numerous firsthand accounts of fighting in and around the Normandy region.  Schneider's works are always well researched and many of the pictures featured "before and after" shots of the various regions where fighting took place.  My only complaint is that the quality of the photos ranges from good to fair.  Some new pictures not seen before but the reproduction quality could have been better.

Overall, this is a very good read, informative and held my interest.  Recommended.

SHERMAN by R.P. Hunnicutt

Even though this work dates back to 1978, it can still be regarded as the ultimate book on the M4 Sherman. It describes the pre-war development of the American medium tanks, then covers the development and production of the M3 Lee/Grant including all marks and variants. The M4 development and production is covered in detail with all marks and variants, upgrades and modifications. British service and modification are also covered. Postwar employment and conversions are included, even though Israeli and other post war conversions are not covered in detail. There are extremely detailed specifications of the M3 and M4, all marks and many of the variants like the M7 and M10. You will also find the specs on most weapons employed on the M3, M4 and variants.

If you are interested in the technical development and production of the M3 and M4 tanks, this book is a must. Well written with 100s of b/w illustrations it is, despite the price, great value.  Out of print.
